Back to School BLOWOUT!

Post your ideas for the dance here!

Anything and everything: music, decorations, snacks, additional activities, etc.

The theme we decided on is sort of demolition/underground/graffiti rave-ish. In the spirit of moving into the new building and leaving the old one behind, this theme fits perfectly and should get people excited for both the dance and the move.

Be prepared to discuss ideas at the next meeting, Wednesday, Sept. 8.

Remember: this is homework!

  1. Ideas we had from the meeting:
starts at 6:30 and doors close at 7, ends at 10
graffiti - paper on the walls for us to decorate beforehand and for others to sign
    dynamite and boxes stacked up
GLOW STICKS. possibly with tickets and having additional ones at the dance
    Maggie Moo's catering
play list of appropriate songs (I immediately though of TNT by ACDC. It may not be the best to dance to but it's still an awesome song and fits with the theme!)

Mrs. Lawson and I briefly discussed other ideas after the meeting:
water from one of those big coolers with the paper cone cups like a construction site
using old blueprints for some decorations
    caution tape
somehow making the store into a "construction trailer"

    Any more ideas??

  2. I say that for the graffiti, we can have the paper on the walls and we can start out the graffiti, but leave a lot of space and have maarkers everywhere so that people can graffiti and write on them too. People like goin crazy drawing on things.

We should make shirts for student council members to wear to show that we are hosting the dance, like we can get just normal white t-shirts, write our names or something on them and splatter them with glow in the dark paint. It'd be something fun to do :) like the meeting before the dance we can color on them in sharpie and then at the dance put the paint on it.

  3. I like the shirt idea. I wish there was some way we could make them open for people to buy, but that would probably be a lot of extra work though.

I'm trying to think of some other street related decorations we could have. Like multi-colored, mini Christmas lights or something? That would be pretty cool.

Also it would be awesome if we wrote something on the wall in huge glow-in-the-dark letters across the walls, like "CHS BLOWOUT", and then everyone can sign in regular markers.

  4. I really like Nancy's idea for the glow in the dark paint saying "CHS BLOWOUT" and everyone signing it. And I am sure that if some people on the council brought Christmas lights we could have enough to hang them up all around the gym. We would probably want a food table in the commons too?

The T-shirts are a great idea! Maybe we could make a few extra and raffle off tickets or something like that to make some extra money? But I really like the Underground / Graffiti theme!

  5. I don't think having the paper on the walls is a good idea. People will go crazy with it and tear it down as well as write vulgar things on it. Just my 2 cents

  6. I'm with Nico on the graffiti idea. It'd be fun, but not something we want open to everyone. Maybe we would just do the graffiti and tape it to the walls, but not leave out markers for everyone else to.
Also, to add to the "demolition" feel, maybe we could do something along the lines of beating an old car, but instead see if there's a section of a wall we can take out and set up for people to take a swing at. We could charge them, or we could just limit everyone to one go.

  7. For music, I could contribute some clean ska music that'd still be fun to dance to (i.e. Reel Big Fish and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones is some good stuff). Just some stuff I'd dance to, maybe others wouldn't, you guys decide: Passion Pit (i.e. The Reeling), LCD Soundsystem (Daft Punk is PLaying at My House), Reel Big Fish (Sellout, Take On Me), The Wombats (Let's Dance to Joy Division), The Shins (Turn A Square)
All the listed songs are 100% clean, I just don't know if people would be up for dancing to some of them.

  8. So after the meeting today nancy, cat, tim, aymeric, and i were talking about things to doa t the blowout to make it more of an event. we came up with: glow in the dark ninja, ping pong, indoor bowling, and possibly video games on prjectors. this way there are more things for people to do, rather than sit around or dance. we could get teacher or parent volunteers to work each game/ station. this would also possibly eliminate the need for a dj, becaus epeople would be all over the place. i know it sounds crazy, but i can explain it better in person at the meeting next week!

  9. Nick, I'd dance to that!
Also I like the demolition idea, but will they let us take out a section of wall? We could make a really awkward pinata structure of our school or something (that would be HILARIOUS) and we just destroy it.

    Our discussion was awesome.
Basically our theory was that it's a "blow-out" so we should just have random non-school activities everywhere (i.e. bowling, ping-pong). I don't know it just makes sense, and it would be soo fun. You just walk through the school, and people are going crazy with ninja or whatever. Cool cool stuff.

  10. Nick - I had the same idea about the car but unfortunately it got shot down by Mr. Aquila last year. And they probably wouldn't let us take out a section of the wall.

Daniel - I like those ideas! The video games sound cool, but that's limited to just a few people and those crazy people who are into them (no offense to anyone who is one of those people!) get really into them and would probably hog the system. It wouldn't really be a social thing, you know?

Nancy - Mrs. Lawson, Austin, and I were talking about ideas after the meeting and came up with the pinata of the school too! I think we'll definitely follow through with that and even start constructing it at the next meeting. I definitely like the random fun stuff idea, if we could get use of some of those classrooms. Maybe just Ms. Kay's and the choir room even? And I guess I don't understand the ninja thing lol.

Other ideas we came up with:
Some kind of crafty thing - if we wanted to do the t shirts, how bout have people decorate white ones with sharpies? then they could get their friends to sign if they wanted to.
A pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey type thing - maybe a falcon? or something dynamite themed? everybody could get whatever is being pinned, write their name on it, and have a winner announced at say 9?
For the graffiti - us just cut out and decorate the letters and not have people sign them. it would still look cool and not have the mess of everybody marking up the walls.
For the music - Have a block of songs from 1996-2010 to commemorate the years of being in this building

Everybody keep posting ideas! Soon we'll have to narrow it down to what we are definitely going to do so we can start working on it next meeting and advertise our attractions.

  11. We have the Student Council elections on the Wednesday before the dance. What if we reserved like ten minutes of the dance -- somewhere in the middle-ish, to break up the dancing, and announce the new student council members?

  12. Great idea, Austin!

Mr. Thompson aka DJ Jazzy Greg as agreed to DJ for us, which is great! We really need to get on a song list for him though. I really like the idea of some late 90s music to go along with the "farewell" part of the dance.

I have a small homework assignment for you all: come to the next meeting with a list of 10 appropriate songs that are fun to dance/listen to. I think we will get a good variety between everybody and we'll get somebody to compile all the songs into one list. If you want to get more than 10, go for it! Have 2-3 of the songs be from 1996-about 2001.

The next meeting will be mostly focused on the dance. We're gonna jump right in and start with decorations and posters and what not.

  13. Hey guys! for anyone interested in doing the whole video thing for the Blowout, there is a meeting in Ms. Lawson's room after school on Monday for only about 15 to 20 minutes.
